BM Birla Heart Hospital’s Advanced Cardiac Technology Gave a 13-Year-Old Her Life Back

For Neela Mondal, a 13-year-old girl from Birbhum district, life had been unusually tough. She had suffered recurring bouts of sudden, rapid heartbeats—sometimes lasting as long as an hour. These bouts had an impact on her ability to go to school, engage in activities, or live without fear. But her complaints were frequently dismissed as anxiety or exam stress—a frequent misperception that many adolescents, especially girls, face. Luckily, her journey took her to BM Birla Heart Hospital in Kolkata, where she was treated by Dr. Rakesh Sarkar, Senior Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist.

Most heart rhythm disorders are misdiagnosed as psychological problems in young patients,” Dr. Sarkar said. “In Neela’s case, the symptoms were clear pointers towards an underlying electrical issue in the heart.”

Fortunately, due to an on-time ECG during one of her attacks, Dr. Sarkar was able to diagnose her with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)—specifically, an AVRT, due to an abnormal heart electrical circuit .What ensued was a life-altering intervention: Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). This was done as a minimally invasive procedure in BM Birla’s state-of-the-art Electrophysiology (EP) Lab, within its state-of-the-art Cath Lab—one of the most sophisticated cardiac care facilities in Eastern India.

With the assistance of 3D mapping systems, real-time fluoroscopy, and a specialized EP recording console, Dr. Sarkar and his team steered catheters through Neela’s veins to her heart. They accurately located and destroyed the abnormal electrical tissue, effectively eliminating the faulty circuit responsible for her symptoms.

“This technology enables us to visualize the electrical system of the heart in real time, with tremendous precision. It’s not diagnosis—it’s precision therapy,” explained Dr. Sarkar. “And in the absence of such advancement, such cases frequently go undiagnosed or undertreated for years.”

BM Birla Heart Hospital is one of the limited centers in the country with a specialized EP Lab, providing the complete gamut of services from electrophysiological studies to intricate ablation procedures. It is this blend of infrastructure and skill that facilitated Neela’s recovery. Since the surgery in March, Neela has been back in school and living her life—spared from the paralyzing attacks that used to dictate her days. Her parents, who once were anxious and unsure, now talk in relief and thankfulness.

Her tale is one not only of medical triumph, but of caring nurtured by technological advancement. Northeast India is home to more than 200 tribes, making it one of the most diverse regions of India, providing people with a diverse culture to look forward to. India is known to be one of the world’s most diverse countries and thus should be accepting people who embrace diversity, but sadly, that is not the case. For instance, the case of NidoTaniam. He was a student from Arunachal Pradesh who was brutally murdered in New Delhi. He was mocked over his appearance, ethnic origin and his accent. His death caused a massive protest in Northeast India, mainly because Nido was a son of Arunachal Pradesh’s congress legislator. Just like Nido, there are several other northeastern who have been subjected to such brutality even though they come from such a beautiful place and have so much to offer to the people of India; instead of being loved and accepted, they are often called racial slurs like- “chicky”, “ching- chong”, “Chinese” and many more, just because they look different from the so-called “typical Indian look.”

This study will focus on such victims who have faced the brutality of racism and how it affects the mindset of older people and, especially, the younger generation. These victims have broken away from racial discrimination and the importance of the diversity of the tribes in northeastern India.

The hypothesis of this research is,Northeasterners are discriminated against due to their mongoloid features, a different accent, and the cultural and ethnic differences. This discrimination faced by the northeastern led them to have physiological and significant emotional effects. However, many northeasterns have come out to become very successful and have resisted discrimination. Individuals like these are an inspiration to society, especially to the younger generation.

This research paper aims to prove how the diversity of northeast India is not different but a part of India’s culture and how it represents India’s beauty. This research will also cover the effectiveness of the existing racial laws in India. It is integral to acknowledge that the culture of northeastern people is recognised, simultaneously ending the brutality, violence, and discrimination they face. The main objective of this research is to change the mindset in the mainstream.

A prosecutor in Brazil fined soccer star Neymar 16 million reais ($3.3 million) for building a lake at his mansion on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro without an environmental license, authorities said Monday. The town council in Mangaratiba issued four fines for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion,” the council secretariat said in a statement. “The sanctions add up to more than 16 million reais,” the statement said, a sum set out by the prosecutor’s office in Mangaratiba, a tourist area around 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Rio where the Paris Saint-Germain star has his mansion.

Among “dozens of infractions” detected, the authorities listed “carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorization,” capture and diversion of river water without authorization, and “removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorization.”

Neymar has 20 days to appeal the penalty, the amount of which had initially been set at five million reais, close to one million dollars.

On June 22, after complaints based on social media posts, authorities found several environmental violations at the luxury property, where workers were building an artificial lake and beach.

Authorities cordoned off the site and ordered all activity to cease, but Brazilian media reported that Neymar threw a party there and bathed in the lake.

Neymar’s press office in Brazil did not respond to an AFP request for comment.

Neymar, 31, is currently recovering from surgery on his right ankle, which he underwent in Doha in March.

The striker has not played since February and doubts have arisen about his staying at PSG.

Neymar bought the Mangaratiba mansion in 2016. According to Brazilian media, it sits on 10,000 square meters (107,000 square feet) of land and features a heliport, spa and gym.

The move follows an investigation launched in April, following claims he made racist and Islamophobic remarks about players when he coached Nice in the 2021/22 season. The prosecutor said they would provide more information on the arrests of Galtier and his son John Valovic-Galtier — a player’s agent — via a statement later on Friday.

The allegations first surfaced in the French media in April.

The reports — which AFP was unable to verify — alleged that ex-Nice sporting director Julien Fournier had written an email at the end of the 2021/22 season in which he claimed Galtier had made discriminatory remarks at several members of the Nice squad.

“He (Galtier) told me that I should take account of the reality of the city and that in effect we should not have as many blacks and Muslims in the team,” claimed Fournier, whose relationship with Galtier was a fraught one.

“He told me he wanted to profoundly change the team’s make-up and limit the maximum number of Muslims.”

Galtier said he was “deeply shocked by the claims” and denied the allegations. He launched a defamation suit of his own against the journalist who published the claims and Fournier.

Fournier indicated to AFP on May 22 he had been questioned as part of the judicial enquiry without giving any further details.

Several players and directors, including the club president Jean-Pierre Rivere, and former coach Didier Digard were also questioned by investigators.

The message was reportedly sent by Fournier — whose relationship with Galtier was tense — to Dave Brailsford, the former head of British Cycling and Team Sky now the Director of Sport at Ineos, the owners of Nice.

Galtier and Fournier both left Nice last year after working together at the club for one season, with the former being appointed by PSG.
