Marking a transformative milestone in cardiac care, Manipal Hospitals, the largest healthcare network in Eastern India, performed –Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR) on a 72-year-old diabetic and hypertensive patient, Mr. Rabindra Kumar Sarkar. Under the supervision of Dr. Kaushik Mukherjee, Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) and Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, Consultant Vascular Surgeon. It was discovered through a CT total aortography that a rare bulge in the major blood vessel (aorta) inside the chest was dangerously close to key arteries that supply blood to the brain and arms, making the condition potentially life-threatening and the treatment highly complex. This bulge, called an aneurysm, was pressing against a nerve that controls the voice box, causing his persistent hoarseness. This unusual condition, known as Ortner’s Syndrome or Cardio-vocal syndrome, only affects 1% to 3% of cases in India making it one of rarest case.

Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR) is a procedure used to treat abnormal bulging of a blood vessel, usually in the aorta. Mr. Sarkar’s case was difficult as the aneurysm was found in a very tricky spot, just after the left subclavian artery (the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the upper limbs (arms), as well as parts of the neck and head) in the descending thoracic aorta, which is a sensitive area, close to major arteries that supply blood to the brain and arms. Despite the high-risk location, the clinicians successfully deployed the stent graft without an open-heart surgery or additional bypass, a testament to the surgical planning and advanced capabilities of the team of clinicians at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria. The aneurysm was sealed, and critical vessels remained untouched. Most importantly, the patient went through the surgery on 26^th May 2025, and was discharged within 2 days.

Elaborating on this rare case, Dr. Kaushik Mukherjee, Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, stated, “Mr. Sarkar came to us with hoarseness of voice, an unusual symptom for an aortic aneurysm, a rarest of rare cases. In fact, given his age and underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension, he was not a good candidate for open surgical repair of Aneurysm through thoracotomy. That is why we opted for a minimally invasive TEVAR procedure. It was technically demanding due to the aneurysm’s critical location, but we were able to successfully seal it without affecting vital blood flow, all while avoiding the risks of open surgery. His smooth recovery is a testament to the planning of our team. His voice has already started improving, and he is now on the path of healing completely.”

Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, said, “Cases like this highlight how far vascular care has come in India. What once required complex open-chest surgery can now be managed through a small incision, thanks to advanced endovascular techniques available across Manipal Hospitals. This procedure was not just about treating an aneurysm, it was about safeguarding quality of life with minimal risk and saving his voice box as well. Our combined expertise allowed us to offer a solution that was both safe and effective for a patient who otherwise would have been a poor candidate for traditional surgery.”

The patient, Mr. Rabindra Kumar Sarkar, stated, “Before coming to Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, I had consulted several physicians, including an ENT specialist, but no one could tell me the reason behind the hoarseness of my voice. When I finally came to Manipal Hospitals, I found not just answers, but life-saving care. I was told I had a serious condition near my heart, and at 72, with diabetes and high blood pressure, I knew surgery would be risky. But the doctors here gave me a new lease on life through a procedure that felt nothing short of miraculous. I walked in with doubt and walked out with hope.”

Joined by her husband, Emon Seuj Goswami, a skilled multi-instrumentalist and sound healer, the tour featured a series of events that offered participants an immersive experience into the healing power of music.

The tour kicked off on September 20, 2024, with a compelling presentation on the therapeutic impact of legendary Assamese singer Jayanta Hazarika at ITA Machkhowa, organized by Byatikram MASDO. Anubhuti’s insightful discussion highlighted how Hazarika’s music continues to serve as a source of emotional and mental healing, resonating deeply with attendees.

In observance of World Alzheimer’s Day, Anubhuti held a workshop on September 21 focusing on memory development through music therapy. The workshop offered practical strategies for caregivers and participants to enhance cognitive functions, particularly memory retention, and was highly praised for its practical approach to addressing memory-related conditions like Alzheimer’s.

The impact of Anubhuti Goswami’s Melodic Minds tour was lauded by experts. This collaboration aims to enhance stroke care treatment, with the center focusing on fortifying the healthcare system in the state and region. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for this collaboration was initiated by Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Managing Director & Group CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, and Dr. B K Rana, Chief Executive Officer of Quality & Accreditation Institute (QAI).

QAI was instituted to establish an educational, training, quality improvement, and accreditation/certification ecosystem with a vision to create a platform for stakeholders, including professionals and organizations involved in any aspect of quality, to share their expertise and knowledge. Among the verticals within QAI is the Centre for Accreditation of Health and Social Care (CAHSC), which oversees accreditation/certification activities in the field of health and social care.

The primary goal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to establish a network of primary stroke centers by connecting smaller hospitals. The initiative involves collaborating with and benefiting nursing homes and clinics, incorporating them into the program to position themselves as local hubs for primary stroke care management, linked with Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI. We aim to expand the comprehensive stroke program to fellow clinics and nursing homes, enabling them to play a more significant role in the community and deliver timely and appropriate care to all stroke patients. This endeavor will empower these stroke centers with the essential knowledge and skills required to provide standardized stroke care. Through this collaboration, we intend to extend top-notch stroke care to the residents of Ahmedabad by engaging nearby community hospitals, and offering them training and expertise to evolve into L1 and L2 stroke centers in association with MCIMS and QAI.

This unique partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing the overall healthcare ecosystem in stroke care, aiming for a lasting impact in Ahmedabad. Marengo CIMS Hospital has consistently taken the lead in pioneering initiatives for the people of Gujarat, and the collaboration with the esteemed institution, QAI, underscores the hospital’s enduring clinical expertise. The objective is to establish a network of primary stroke centers in collaboration with Marengo CIMS Hospital connecting these centers to stroke software or AI hospitals to reduce the diagnosis time. Doctors involved in this endeavour will receive joint certifications from Marengo CIMS Hospital and QAI. Additionally, the initiative encompasses various components, including the collective organization of Stroke Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, joint presentation, and publications of the program’s impact at diverse forums, and heightened community awareness through community programs. The collaboration also focuses on training and implementing awareness protocols for stroke treatment., emphasizing adherence to critical time frames for patient care. the overarching goal is to enhance the efficiency of the current stroke care system, making it more effective in both, hub and spoke locations.

This initiative is aimed towards achieving better clinical outcomes in Stroke, capacity building, and establishing a network of competent stroke centers.”

Stroke is the second most common cause of death in India. About 1,85,000 strokes occur every year in India with nearly one stroke every 40 seconds and one stroke death every 4 minutes. The cumulative incidence of stroke in India ranged from 105 to 152/100,000 persons per year during the past two decades in different parts of the country. The rising cases of stroke among younger people in India are a concerning trend that cannot be ignored. Lifestyle factors, genetic predisposition, and emerging risk factors contribute to this alarming phenomenon. Dr Paul emphasizes the importance of awareness, education, and preventive measures. Statistics show that following a stroke: 10 percent of patients recover almost completely. 25 percent of patients recover with only minor impairments. 40 percent of patients experience moderate-to-severe impairments that require special care. this makes it even more critical that awareness about strokes and their outcome reaches people consistently.
