Centre for Sight, one of India’s leading eye-care networks, has strengthened its clinical capabilities in Guwahati with the joining of Dr. Sanjoy Kumar Buragohain, an ophthalmologist with 28 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology.

The addition of Dr. Buragohain will further strengthen Centre for Sight Guwahati’s capabilities in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmic conditions, cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology, helping patients across Guwahati, Assam and the Northeast access specialised eye care closer to home.

Centre for Sight has built a strong presence across the country with a network of 95 hospitals, 350+ doctors and more than 15 lakh patients served annually. With 30 years of experience in eye care, the organisation continues to expand access to specialised ophthalmic care while strengthening clinical expertise across its hospitals in India.

Dr. Buragohain completed his MBBS from Guwahati Medical College, followed by MS in Ophthalmology from Assam Medical College and DNB in Ophthalmology. He also pursued specialised training in glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. His experience spans medical and surgical ophthalmology, with a strong focus on glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology and cataract care.

A key area of focus at Centre for Sight Guwahati will be the comprehensive diagnosis and management of glaucoma, a condition that can gradually damage the optic nerve and, if not detected and managed in time, may lead to irreversible vision loss.

Glaucoma evaluation may include intraocular pressure measurement, gonioscopy, corneal thickness assessment or pachymetry, optic nerve evaluation, visual field testing or perimetry, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for assessment of the retinal nerve fibre layer and optic nerve. These investigations help doctors assess the type and stage of glaucoma, monitor progression and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Depending on the type and severity of glaucoma, treatment may include eye-pressure-lowering medications, laser procedures and surgical interventions. Surgical options can include Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices or valve procedures, based on the patient’s clinical condition. Laser procedures like laser peripheral iridotomy may also be considered for appropriate patients.

Dr. Buragohain’s expertise in neuro-ophthalmology will further strengthen the evaluation of patients with vision problems linked to the optic nerve, brain and neurological pathways. Neuro-ophthalmic conditions may present with symptoms such as unexplained reduction in vision, double vision, optic nerve abnormalities, visual field defects or other complex visual disturbances that require detailed assessment to identify the underlying cause.

Cataract care will also form an important part of his clinical practice at Centre for Sight Guwahati, including evaluation, surgical planning and management using modern cataract surgery techniques and appropriate intraocular lens options based on individual patient requirements.

Kaziranga University unveiled an ambitious roadmap to position itself as a strategic knowledge and innovation partner in the transformation of Assam and the North-East through globally connected education, cutting-edge research, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.

Addressing the press conference, Shri Basant Khetan, Pro Chancellor of Kaziranga University, said the University is entering a new phase of institution building that aligns with the aspirations of Viksit Assam and Viksit Bharat 2047.

“The future of universities lies beyond awarding degrees. Universities must become engines of innovation, entrepreneurship, skill development and societal transformation. Our vision is to build Kaziranga University into a nationally respected institution that empowers youth, strengthens communities and contributes directly to the sustainable development of Assam and the North-East.”

The Pro Chancellor observed that Assam is experiencing one of the most significant periods of development in its history. Massive investments in infrastructure, healthcare, digital connectivity, logistics, advanced manufacturing and sustainable development are transforming the State into India’s gateway to the East.

He noted that the expanding strategic partnership between India and Japan, together with increasing global interest in the North-East, is expected to create unprecedented opportunities in sectors such as sustainable agriculture, silk and sericulture, food processing, river and water management, flood resilience, biodiversity, climate adaptation, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and future technologies. The 2nd North East Social Work Conclave 2026 was successfully held at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), Guwahati, bringing together over 300 participants, including social work students, academicians, NGOs, CSR professionals, development practitioners, and government representatives from across Northeast India and other parts of the country.

Organised by Indian Awaz Foundation, the Conclave served as an important regional platform to promote collaboration, dialogue, and professional pathways within the social development sector. One of the key highlights of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KKHSOU and Indian Awaz Foundation, aimed at strengthening long-term cooperation in social work education, research, internships, and community-based initiatives.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of KKHSOU emphasised the university’s commitment to community engagement and practice-oriented education, highlighting the importance of partnerships between academic institutions and development organisations.

The Conclave featured two major panel discussions—“Career Pathways for Professional Social Workers in Child Protection, Law & Social Justice Systems” and “New-Age NGOs & CSR Partnerships: Building Sustainable and Scalable Social Impact.” The panels brought together senior professionals from UNICEF, Assam Startup – The Nest, legal and child rights institutions, and CSR leaders from national organisations, including experts who travelled from Mumbai to share their experiences.

In addition, the programme included youth engagement activities, internship and networking sessions, NGO showcases, and discussions on Social Action Plans, creating meaningful linkages between students, civil society organisations, and the CSR ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, Md. Nazim Ahmed, Founder & Director, Indian Awaz Foundation, shared that the Conclave is part of a broader Vision 2030 to build a strong network of professional social workers across Northeast India through state-wise chapters and sustained collaborative initiatives.

Following the Assam edition, the Conclave plans to expand to Meghalaya later this year, further strengthening regional cooperation in the social development sector.

Atypical Advantage, India’s largest livelihood platform for persons with disabilities, has launched Atypical Academy, a fully accessible learning platform created by and for persons with disabilities. The Academy brings accessibility to the center of education, enabling students with visual, hearing, locomotor, and neurodiverse conditions to participate in learning environments that are inclusive from the start.

After supporting thousands of persons with disabilities in finding employment, Atypical Advantage recognised that the real challenge lies in education. Many students are left behind not because of a lack of capability, but because mainstream coaching and training institutes are not equipped to accommodate their needs. Atypical Academy has been designed to close this gap by offering equal access to both academic preparation and skill development.

The Academy is introducing accessible coaching for CUET and IIT JEE, English literacy courses for the Deaf, MS Office training for the visually impaired, business communication modules for persons with locomotor disabilities, and UI and UX courses for neurodiverse learners. All programs are supported with screen reader compatibility, sign language interpretation, captioning, and mentorship by experienced educators with disabilities. Each course is built to ensure that no student faces communication barriers or accessibility hurdles in the learning process.

Vineet Saraiwala, Founder of Atypical Advantage, said, “We cannot address the livelihoods challenge for persons with disabilities without first addressing educational inequality. There is no global learning platform built specifically for persons with disabilities. Our Academy aims to fill that space by creating accessible education pathways that open up real opportunities. As someone who is visually impaired and has benefited from inclusive education, I believe that accessibility must be the foundation, not an afterthought.”

In India, 5% of seats in higher education institutions such as IITs, IIMs, and central universities are reserved for persons with disabilities, yet many of these seats remain unfilled due to the lack of accessible coaching. The academy seeks to bridge this divide by helping students prepare effectively for competitive exams and professional skill programs that can lead to meaningful careers.

By next year, approximately 1000 students are expected to graduate from Atypical Academy. Upon graduation, they will be connected with Atypical Advantage’s network of over 450+ corporates, ensuring that inclusive education leads to meaningful employment opportunities.

To help the PWD students further, the Academy has launched a “Fund a Child” initiative that enables individuals, corporates, and philanthropists to sponsor their education. Sponsorships will cover course fees, learning aids, and mentorship support, ensuring that no student is excluded for financial reasons.

The 12th Edition of the Inter-School Drama Competition 2025–26, hosted by Modern English School, Kahilipara, illuminated the stage of Dr. Banikanta Kakati Auditorium, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, with an inspiring celebration of creativity, expression, and the performing arts. A one-day workshop on the NEP Syllabus of the B.Pharm Course and the AEBAS Attendance System was successfully conducted at the Institute of Pharmacy, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), Tepesia, Sonapur. The event was organised by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and hosted by ADBU, aiming to familiarise faculty members and administrators with the newly revised B.Pharm syllabus under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the implementation of the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS).

The workshop was graced by eminent dignitaries, including Mr Jashubhai Hirabhai Chaudhari, Vice President, PCI; Dr Deependra Singh, Chairman, Education Regulation Committee, PCI; and other Executive Committee and Central Council Members. The Pro Vice Chancellor, Fr. Joseph Nellanatt, and the Registrar of ADBU also attended the event along with over 80 delegates representing 40 pharmacy colleges across Northeast India.

The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Prof. Raja Chakraborty, Convener of the workshop, who highlighted the importance of aligning pharmacy education with evolving healthcare and digital trends. The ceremony included a tribute to late Assamese icon Shri Zubeen Garg, followed by a traditional Lighting of the Lamp and Saraswati Vandana performed by students. Fr. Nellanatt, in his inaugural speech, expressed delight in hosting a workshop that contributes to national educational reform and academic excellence. Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Chaudhari emphasized the significance of the NEP-aligned syllabus in strengthening clinical competence, research aptitude, and ethical practice among pharmacy graduates. He urged institutions to adopt innovative and student-centered teaching methodologies.

In the first technical session, Dr. Deependra Singh presented an in-depth overview of the restructured B.Pharm curriculum, focusing on the competency-based framework and skill enhancement components. The session encouraged active participation and dialogue among delegates, fostering regional academic collaboration.

The post-lunch session, held in hybrid mode, focused on the AEBAS Attendance System and was led by the PCI IT Department in the presence of Dr. Montu Kumar Patel and Shri Anil Mittal, Registrar-cum-Secretary, PCI. The presentation outlined the system’s operational framework, compliance protocols, and its role in promoting transparency and accountability in academic institutions.

The event marked a significant milestone in advancing academic innovation and regulatory collaboration between the Pharmacy Council of India and institutions in the Northeast.
