Dibrugarh, September 8, 2024: Korxon 5.0, much-anticipated annual quizzing and debating extravaganza at Dibrugarh University, kicked off with energy and intellectual rigor. Organized by the Dibrugarh University Debate and Quiz Forum (DUDQF) in collaboration with the Dibrugarh University Alumni Association, the event brought together nearly 45 participants from various educational institutions across Assam.
The event, inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, saw engaging debates on the topic, “The Implementation of the Creamy Layer Criteria in SC & ST Reservation is the Only Way to Achieve Equity in the Education and Job Sector.” Shri Abhishek Kabra, Research Scholar at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University, Dr. Rizia Begum Lashkar, Assistant Professor of English at Kanoi College, and journalist Ripunjoy Das evaluated the participants’ performances, offering valuable insights into the art of debate and public speaking.
Abhishek Kabra delivered a powerful and motivational speech, encouraging students to view their debating journey as a long-term commitment, much like test match cricket, rather than a quick and fast T-20 game.
“Whatever the results may be today, accept that some days you will fail,” Kabra said, quoting Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid. “Dravid once said, ‘I have batted 604 times for India and failed to cross 50 runs in 410 of those innings. I failed a lot more than I succeeded.’ So, is there any point in worrying about outcomes? In debating, as in life, don’t focus solely on the results. Enjoy the process, form friendships, pull all-nighters for debates, and embrace the journey.”
He further extended the analogy, stating, “We are not playing a T-20 match in life; we are playing a test match. The best thing about test match cricket is that it always gives you a second chance. Just like Harsha Bhogle beautifully explained: when the going gets tough, you don’t get out; you hang in there, just like Cheteshwar Pujara.”
After hours of intense debate, Dibrugarh University emerged as the Best Team, with Jagannath Barooah University securing the runner-up position. DUIET secured third best team of the competition. Prizes were awarded in a closing ceremony, which followed a series of quizzes held over two days, including a quiz for newcomers, a School Quiz, a Bhupen Hazarika-themed quiz, and an Open General Quiz.
The competition was expertly guided by Dr. Chandan Kumar Sharma from the Department of History, who served as the Speaker of the House. Chandopal Saikia, Convener of the Dibrugarh University Debate and Quiz Forum (DUDQF), delivered the welcome and the concluding address.
