Deepak Mittal, India’s ambassador to Qatar,met a senior Taliban leader Sher Mohammed Stanekzai in Doha on Tuesday on the request of the Taliban side,the meeting is said to be the first-ever official meeting between the two sides.
In the Indian statement it is said that “Today, Ambassador of India to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the Head of Taliban’s Political Office in Doha. The meeting took place at the Embassy of India, Doha, on the request of the Taliban side,”
Sher Mohammed Stanekzai who represented the Taliban is said to be one of the top leaders of the Taliban. He has also taken training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun in the early 1980s. In present days, Stanekzai has been playing a key role in foreign relations.
The statement of foreign ministers of India says that “Discussions focused on safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. The travel of Afghan nationals, especially minorities, who wish to visit to India also came up,”
Farther in the statement it is said that “The Taliban Representative assured the Ambassador that these issues would be positively addressed,”
