President Ram Nath Kovind here on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan launched the pulse polio programme for 2021 administering polio drops to children below five years.
The launch of pulse polio programme was organised on the eve of the Polio National Immunisation Day, which is observed on January 31,2021.
The President and the First lady Savita Kovind administered polio drops to children below five years of age. Over 17 crore children below five years of age will be administered polio drops as a part of the government drive to support polio eradication programme.
Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State for health Ashwini Kumar Choubey were also present on the programme.
In an official release, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare noted, “The countrywide drive will be supported by about 24 lakhs volunteers, 1.5 lakh supervisors and many Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), WHO, UNICEF, Rotary, etc. Healthcare workers will be visiting as many as 2crore households to ensure that no child is left without the protection of the polio vaccine.”
Vardhan has also appreciated the efforts of the State governments and supporting organisations like WHO, UNICEF, Rotary for supporting and strengthening the polio programmes as well as other immunization programmes.
He also appreciated the tireless works of the volunteers, frontline workers, healthcare workers for keeping the country polio-free.
