Kane Williamson and 3 other members of New Zealand’s Test Squad participating in IPL to leave for England

IPL 2021: The New Zealand Men’s cricket team skipper Kane Williamson along with the other three members of New Zealand’s Test squad will leave for England on May 11 from India. The rest of the New Zealand players who participated in the currently called off IPL 2021 will go back to their home on Friday.

Before playing the World Test Championship final against Indian at Southampton from June 18, New Zealand will play a two-match test series against the host England. The test series between New Zealand and England will commence from June 2.

An official statement from the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), David White stated that “We’ve worked closely with the BCCI and the IPL franchises on the various departure strategies and we’re very appreciative of their support during what is, clearly, a very challenging time.”

The four NZ test squad members who will leave for England are skipper Kane Williamson, spinner Mitchell Santner, pacer Kyle Jamieson who will remain in a mini-bubble in New Delhi before leaving for the UK.

17 players from New Zealand participated in the presently suspended IPL 2021.

The official statement also stated, “Along with the balance of the New Zealand-bound IPL players, support staff, and commentators, Trent Boult is scheduled to depart New Delhi tomorrow on one of two charter flights, arriving in Auckland on Saturday before undergoing managed isolation.”

“Boult will leave MIQ (Managed Isolation and Quarantine) on May 22 and will spend a week at home with his family, training at Mt Maunganui before departing for the UK in early June,” stated further.

Chris Donaldson, team trainer of the New Zealand men’s cricket team who was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders will also go back to his home for a brief period before joining the squad in England.

The players and the support staff returning to New Zealand would observe all regulatory COVID protocols, including pre-departure tests.

Earlier, IPL 2021 was suspended after the bio bubble of different teams was compromised and several players tested positive for COVID-19.

Microsoft Introduced ‘Reading Progress Feature’: Beneficial For Students to Enrich Reading Fluency

Microsoft has introduced a new Reading Progress Feature to help students with reading fluency. The company has launched the feature to its video meet and collaboration platform Microsoft Teams.

According to the company, the newly introduced feature can boost reading fluency in adult literacy. Especially it can particularly help the students in elementary schools. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has changed the definition of normal along with the ways of life.

Pandemic has heavily impacted the education system where the teachers try to cope with the new normal. In online education, teachers are facing issues to assess a student’s reading fluency in person. The Company is hoping that Microsoft’s new feature will help to solve the precise matter.

The feature allows the user to measure the precision, expression as well as the promptness of reading. It is said the feature will support different dialects and accents in the upcoming days. In the initial days, it will start developing for a US English audience.

Educators also will be able to turn off auto-detection. They can access the student’s enactment manually through a video of the student reading. The feature will also allow Teachers to regulate the sensitivity of the feature. In that way, they’ll be enabled to measure students with dyslexia or speech disorders. Azure is the backend support of this technology.

In the year 2021, Microsoft Teams added more than 100 new capabilities to date. Microsoft Teams has 145 million daily active global users.

Covaxin gets central drugs authority panel approval for restricted use

India’s first indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin, has been recommended for “restricted use in emergency situation, subject to multiple regulatory conditionalties” by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), here on Saturday. The Drugs Controller General (DCGI) will take a final call on approving rollout of the vaccine in the country.

The recommendation was made following a two-day meeting which earlier saw the panel sending Covishield, the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and manufactured by Pune’s Serum Institute of India (SII) for DCGI approval on Friday.

Rahul Pandit, member of Maharashtra’s COVID-19 task force welcoming the developments said vaccinating such a huge population in a diverse geography is a challenge.

“The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is vector-based which has gone through three significant trial stages with 70% efficacy rate. While the vaccine is safe, however, there are some people who have severe drug allergies (leading to anaphylaxis reaction) and those with compromised immune systems who need to first take approval from their doctors before they take the vaccine shot. With the doctor’s go-ahead, these two groups should certainly get the vaccine,” he said.

Dr. Pandit added that as of now, no data is available for vaccination of children and pregnant patients.

“An advisory in the UK suggested that pregnant patients can take the vaccine only if they are at a high risk of contracting the disease, and that it should be taken as late in pregnancy as possible.”

Stating that India has been given two COVID-19 vaccines by January 2, chairman, Liver Transplant Unit, Medanta Hospital Arvind Soin said, “The DCGI has gone to great lengths to ensure these are safe vaccines and the emergency use comes with explicitly stated conditions. We must all come forward to start building up national herd immunity once frontline workers and at-risk citizens are inoculated.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday said it has successfully isolated and cultured the U.K. variant of Sars-CoV-2, adding that no other country has so far reported success in isolation and culture of the variant, according to ICMR.

“Vero cell lines were used by the scientists of ICMR- National Institute of Virology NIV to culture the UK-variant of the virus,” said ICMR.

“U.K. variant of the virus, with all signature changes, is now successfully isolated and cultured from the clinical specimens collected from UK-returnees,” noted ICMR in its tweet. India has so far reported 29 cases of the new coronavirus variant.

COVID-19 test mandatory for tourists visiting Nainital, Mussoorie: Uttarakhand HC

The Uttarakhand High Court has ordered mandatory COVID-19 test of tourists visiting Nainital and Mussoorie. In an order dated December 9, Acting Chief Justice Ravi Kumar Malimath and Justice Ravindra Maithani of the high court said tourists visiting the two popular tourist towns be tested for coronavirus at the time of entry.

The order to resume testing of tourists comes ahead of Christmas and New Year holidays when large inflow of tourists is expected in Nainital and Mussoorie.

COVID-19 cases have risen in Uttarakhand after the compulsory requirement for tourists to produce a negative RT-PCR report while entering the state was removed in September to boost tourism.

COVID-19 vaccine ready & coming within weeks: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that a COVID-19 vaccine is “ready” and going to be announced “within weeks” to combat the deadly disease that has killed over 223,000 Americans, as he debated with his Democratic challenger Joe Biden for the final time before the presidential election.

The debate, just less than two weeks ahead of the crucial presidential elections on November 3, started with opening remarks by both the candidates, when the mike of the other was muted.

The coronavirus dominated the opening minutes of the Trump-Biden face-off with President Trump terming the contagion a worldwide problem .

This has been a worldwide problem, but I’ve been congratulated by many countries on what we’ve been able to do, he said at the debate held in Nashville, Tennessee.

“We have a vaccine that’s coming, it’s ready. It’s going to be announced within weeks and it’s going to be delivered, the President said, adding that companies like Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer are doing very well on that front.

Trump claimed that he had done a good job with a worldwide pandemic, saying the country needs to learn to live with it.

Responding to the President, Biden said that Trump has no plan.

He always says people are learning to live with it. People are learning to die with it, Biden said.

I will take care of this. I will make sure we have a plan, the former vice president said.

Biden said that this is a dark winter as he came down heavily on the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic.

Trump praised the US response to the pandemic, claiming that the crisis is going away .

On the question of lockdown, Trump said: We don’t have the ability to lock ourselves in basement .

We’re not going to shut down and we have to open our schools, Trump said. The cure cannot be worse than the problem itself, Trump said.

According to Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker, the coronavirus has so far infected more than 41 million people and killed over 1.1 million people globally. The US is the worst affected country with over 8 million cases and 223,000 deaths.
