Ri Sai, a newly developed cultural stopover on the Guwahati–Shillong highway at Nongpoh, is positioning itself as a new model for highway tourism in the Northeast by integrating hospitality, dining, indigenous textiles, and craft-based livelihoods in a single destination. At the heart of Ri Sai is the Integrated Textile & Tourism Centre (ITTC) developed by the Government of Meghalaya’s Textile Department. The centre focuses on preserving and promoting Eri silk, a GI-tagged, non-violent fibre native to Northeast India. Visitors are introduced to the process of Eri silk production, from raw fibre to finished textile, while also learning about its cultural and ecological significance. At a time when Eri silk, or Ahimsa silk is getting popular among users across the globe, the centre aligns tourism with artisan livelihoods, positioning traditional textiles as part of a contemporary economic narrative rather than a museum-led display .

The ITTC is supported by a curated emporium featuring indigenous and GI-tagged products from Meghalaya, including Eri silk textiles, woven bamboo crafts, Larani pottery, Lakadong turmeric, and locally sourced wooden artefacts. The retail component enables direct market access for local producers while allowing visitors to engage with authentic regional products .

The restaurant at Ri Sai is designed as a destination in itself, redefining the highway dining experience. Unlike typical roadside eateries, it offers a well-planned space with expansive views of the hills of Nongpoh, allowing travellers to slow down and dine comfortably. Visitors can experience local Meghalayan flavours alongside familiar Indian dishes. All meals are prepared fresh and served in a clean, welcoming setting, with both indoor seating and open outdoor areas overlooking the landscape. By combining regional food, scenic surroundings, and thoughtful design, the restaurant stands out as one of the very few highway dining destinations in the region that offers comfort, authenticity, and a sense of place.

Ri Sai also offers Ri Sai Cottage Stays, comprising one- and two-bedroom cottages and rooms designed for comfort and privacy. Coir Expo aims to proliferates and flourish in Assam, organises four days Coir expo in Guwahati

Coir Board, with support from the Ministry of micro, small & medium enterprise has organised a 4 days expo in Jyotichitraban Kahilipara Guwahati. The expo started on 23rd of March and will end on 26th of March. The inauguration took place in presence of Hon’ble Shri D Kuppuramu ji (Chairman Coir Board) and Hon’ble Shri Lakshmana S, IAS (Secretary, Minister of Industry Govt of Assam) and Jitendra Kumar Shukla (Secretary Coir Board). The expo aims at promoting Coir and its uses.

Coir Board was set up under the Coir Industry Act, 1953 by the Government of India for the overall sustainable development of the coir industry in the Country.

The functions of the Board as laid down under the Act include undertaking, assisting and encouraging scientific, technological and economic research, modernization, quality improvement, human resource development, market promotion and welfare of all those who are engaged in this industry.

The functions mandated under the Coir Industry Act are carried out by Coir Board under the various Schemes/Programmes, including research and development activities, training programmes, extending financial support for setting up of coir units, domestic as well as export market development, welfare measures to the workers etc.

● Coir industry sustains more than 7 lakhs of coir workers, predominantly women, in different States of the country.

● It is estimated that around 80% of the workforce in the industry are women and it plays a vital role in rural women empowerment in many coastal districts of the country.

● There are 1570 registered coir exporters in the country.

● The export of the Coir and Coir products from India during the year 2020-21 registered an all-time high record of Rs 3778.98 crores with an increase of over Rs 1021 crores from the previous year. The increase in value works out to 37% in comparison with the 2019-20 figures. Coir Board is focused to achieve Rs. 7000 crores of coir exports in a couple of years.

● Under PMEGP (Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme), Coir Units have been started in different states of the country.

● Coir products are eco-friendly in nature and gained “Eco Mark” certification by the Ministry of Environment and Forests Govt. Of India.

● Coir products save the environment and help to reverse Global Warming.

o “Coir Wood” used to save trees and forest

● The Board’s Research Institutes are Undertaking new R&D projects in coir with various CSIR units and Universities, in the field of spinning and product diversification.

● The initiatives of the Coir Board have led to a series of product development and diversification activities that have helped to launch a number of value-added products, meeting consumer needs. New end-use applications of coir like the use of coir Gertextiles for preventing soil erosion, conservation of Coir Pith into a valuable biofertilizer and soil conditioner and Coir Garden articles have gained popularity in India and abroad. The growing affinity towards environment-friendly products has helped coir and coir products in domestic as well as foreign markets.

● In Gujarat, the Ministry of MSME has sanctioned the following 2 SFURTI clusters with a project outlay of Rs 472.73 lakhs, which will throw open more employment opportunities.

Coir board supplied worth 1.1 crore geotextiles and geo logs to the Brahmaputra board during this financial year 2022-23 for the use of soil control at Majali, Assam

I have seen various scenarios where there was a serious misconduct by people who posed as experienced packers and extracted money from the customers. There was an instance that I remember, a customer’s shipment was not delivered even after a week’s time. When he reached the office, he found empty chairs and tables. We wanted to enhance the customer experience and improve the existing system. We formulate this Federation Frive years ago and We made considerable amount of progress” Alok added.

Anoop Mishra, Secretary & Spokesperson, while speaking with media mentioned, “The main agenda of setting up an Federation is to safeguard the interests of the consumers who put their hard earned money in the hands of Packers and movers.” While addressing the media, shared experiences that he has witnessed over two decades and quoted “I have seen people operating ten different companies from one single room. Only one person with different names posts multiple quotations there by misleading the customer and getting the order for shifting.”

Modern English School, Kahilipara celebrated the 74th Republic Day and Saraswati Puja with great enthusiasm and patriotic spirit at the school premises. The event was attended by students, teachers, and staff members, and was held in the school premises.

The program began with the unfurling of the national flag by the school Principal, Mrs. Jonali Das, followed by the singing of the national anthem. The school Principal, in her address, emphasized the importance of Republic Day and the role it plays in fostering national unity and promoting the values of democracy. The school Principal also spoke about the significance of Saraswati Puja, which is celebrated to honor the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, and art.

The highlight of the event was a cultural program presented by the students, which included patriotic songs and dances. The students performed with great enthusiasm and energy, showcasing their talents and love for their country. The program ended with the distribution of Prasad among the students and staff.

Guwahati IIT Students Invent Unique Braille Printer; Gets backing of Goa Startup Incubator

Startup idea ‘TactAll’, a unique portable braille printer by two Guwahati-based students lands an opportunity to be funded by the Atal Incubation Centre at Goa Institute of Management (AIC-GIM) as a result of the unique startup hackathon held at the Purple Fest in Goa.

Purple Fest Goa 2023 was organized in association with the Goa State Commission for Persons with Disabilities. Guwahati-based IIT students, Kaviraj Prithvi and Lalika Laya shall receive support from the incubator in the form of entrepreneur mentoring, access to the network, and financial support.

The Purple Fest Accessibility Hackathon aimed to inspire entrepreneurs, IT companies, students, and innovators to create solutions and support systems that solve the daily difficulties experienced by people with impairments. The innovation, viability, sustainability, and practicality of the ideas were taken into account while choosing the winners.

Inputs like text, audio, custom keyboard input, and photos are all intended to be converted by a mouse-sized device into printed braille and tactile graphics. Multiple patent applications are being filed for this idea. The duo will also have the chance to apply for India’s own funding program, Horses Stable.

“During our research for the hackathon, we interacted with members of the visually impaired community in Bengaluru to understand their problems and find out what is the one thing that they struggle with often. During that time, we found the value braille holds in their life and the inefficiency of standard braille devices. They are bulky and expensive which is quite unfair as it makes opportunities and an independent life out of reach for the blind. We feel truly accomplished and grateful for this opportunity given to us by AIC-GIM. We are at the 3rd iteration of the prototype. We hope to finalize the design and start production soon.” says Prithvi.

Kaviraj has been inventing across a variety of fields and has received national recognition for his work on a BP monitoring device, soft robotic theories, etc. He has a pending patent for a rotor control system, and some of his inventions are being worked on by teams at IIT Guwahati. Co-Founder LalikaLaya is an Engineering Physics student who is a product management enthusiast and has also won the National Women Entrepreneurship Challenge 2022 for developing a Passive Stabilising Shoe.

Guwahati Foodie presents Ethnic Food Photography Contest awards

Guwahati Foodie, the largest dedicated food-related community in the region gave away the prizes of its Ethnic Food Photography Contest on December 25. Tapanjyoti Bora, Sikha Tamuly and Rajashri Gogoi were awarded in the event held on the premises of the Heritage Khorika restaurant in Guwahati.

Expert of Assamese cuisine, Chef Atul Lahkar and eminent personality from the FM industry, Shubhankar Baruah handed over the awards to the three winners of the contest. Each of the winners, received a trophy, a certificate, a gift and food vouchers as their awards.

Guwahati Foodie organised this competition to highlight the rich heritage of ethnic cuisines from the state and the entire Northeast region. More than 500 entries came from across the country for this contest, out of which three were selected as winners. The winners were decided by a panel consisting of eminent persons from both the world of food, as well as the world of photography.

Speaking about the contest, Sisir Kumar, the owner of Guwahati Foodie said, “This contest is our humble attempt to preserve as well as promote the rich palette of Assam and the entire Northeast. We organise this contest annually to encourage more and more people to try out as well as to showcase the ethnic cuisines on social media. And this spreads awareness as well as inquisitiveness about the food of the region.”

This annual contest of Guwahati Foodie aims to commemorate World Tourism Day and World Food Day every year. While the contest opens for entries on September 27, it ends on October 14. This edition of the contest was supported by Barbecue Nation, Fat Belly, Momo Ghar, Oriental Bistro, Purabi Dairy, Sterling Reserve Packaged Drinking Water, Discover East and Life’s Purple.

Chef Atul Lahkar mentioned, “I want to congratulate all the participants of the competition and not just the winner. It is very heartening to see so many young people having knowledge of about ethnic cuisines of the region and its presentation.”

Shubhankar Baruah said, “Ingredients and recipes are an integral part of the culture of any community or the region, and Guwahati Foodie and its 130000 plus members are doing excellent work towards sustaining that side of our rich heritage.”

SATTRIYA SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV organized at Modern English School,Guwahati

To draw the new generation’s attention towards the values and ideologies left by Mohoprobhu Sri Sri Shankardeva and Mohoprobhu Sri Sri Madhavdeva, Modern English School, Kahilipara, Guwahati had organized a four days’ Sattriya Mahotsav’ from 20th December to 23rd December 2022. The four-day festival witnessed various cultural activities organized by the school’s students.

During the festival, students performed Borgeets like ‘Suno Suno Re Xuro’, Keli Kore Brindabone, Narayan Kahe Bhokoti Koru and so on, delivered speeches stating the significance of the Sattriya culture in Assam. Various other activities were also performed that showcased the saints’ ideologies like Dihanaam, Sattriya Nritya, Krishna Nritya. Different colourful Mukhas (Mask) of Bhaona were also exhibited in the festival. The event was also graced by Dr. Deepan Das, Assistant Professor at R.G Baruah College.

Students of Modern English School also presented a research paper on ‘Sattriya Sanskritir Charcha Aru Pratyahbaan’ in the presence of Nrityashiromani Guru Govinda Saikia. In addition, students also released a hand-written newsletter that comprised various art and articles on the aspects of Sattriya culture.

REVA University presented Panchavaktram – a performance to throw light upon burning issues like climate change and gender equality through dance at Pragjyoti ITA Cultural Complex, Guwahati.The event was presided over by Dr. P. Shyama Raju, Hon’ble Chancellor of REVA University.

As the students of School of Performing Arts and Indic Studies showcased their talent, Dr. P. Shyama Raju (Hon’ble Chancellor, REVA University) shared his thoughts, “In keeping with the G20 Summit which has further plotted our country on the Global map and aligned with the SDGs and the theme of One Earth, One Family, One Future REVA University has been staging Pancavaktram in various parts of the country to spread the message of the Indian Knowledge System and of the role that HEIs play in promoting this amongst the youth.”

Dr. Vidya Shimladka (Director, School of Performing Arts and Indic Studies, REVA University) said, “Art in education and education through arts are powerful tools in creating awareness about societal issues. The School of Performing Arts and Indic Studies is committed in providing high standards of education in Arts. This production also rises above all boundaries by propagating the philosophy of “Sahadharma”, bringing harmony within oneself and the society.”

With an aim to emphasize upon the importance of curtailing wastage of natural resources and considering man and woman as yin and yang to each other, the production aimed at culling out rare stories from medieval tests depicting the harmonious marriage of the five elements: Bhoomi, Jal, Agni, Vayu and Akash to create a world as we see. The same elements are manifestations of Shiva’s five forms: Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and Eshana which were represented in dance form.

Through dance form – Mohiniyattam, the concept of creation of earth was showcased, the embodiment of Sadyojata that derives Bhoomi with the help of Parvati. The group of Odissi Dancers on the other hand suavely represented the second element Jal personified by their version of Vamadeva and the existence of Ganga. The act of how the importance of ‘Agnija’ – an Amsha of Shiva, epitome of light was realized after her abandonment was portrayed by Bharatnatyam performers who depicted the Aghora facet of Lord Shiva that manifests element ‘Agni’. Tatpurusha embodiment of Tatva Vayu was presented in Kuchipudi Dance Style emphasizing its essential nature without which the other elements cannot survive, finally culminating into the last act of portrayal of Eshana, Shiva’s fifth form that manifests Akash. The universe that reverberates with the sound of ‘Om’ emanated first from Shiva’s damaru and this quintessential fact from Indian mythology was presented by Kathak Dancers.
