Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred with the ‘Order of the Nile’, Egypt’s highest honour, by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Presidential palace in Cairo.

Instituted in 1915, the ‘Order of the Nile’ is conferred upon heads of states, crown princes, and vice presidents who offer Egypt or humanity invaluable services. This is the 13th highest state honour conferred upon Prime Minister Modi.

In the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Egypt in 26 years, India and Egypt elevated their relationship to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ after Modi and El-Sisi held wide-ranging talks with a particular focus on enhancing political and security cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his maiden State visit to Egypt, will meet President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi today. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian PrimeMinister to the country in 26 years.

Modi began his maiden state visit to Egypt by holding discussions with his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly and top Cabinet ministers on deepening trade relations and further strengthening the strategic partnership.Seven members of the Egyptian Cabinet, led by Madbouly, were present at the meeting with Modi. This first official engagement was a meeting with the India Unit, a group of high-level ministers constituted by President El-Sisi in March to further enhance the relationship with India.

Foreign Secretary Harshavardhan Shringla has said that the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States has been a comprehensive and useful visit which allowed for high-level interactions. Foreign secretary said this when he was interacting with media persons in New York after the Prime Minister’s address to the UN General Assembly.

Mr. Shringla further in his statement added that the Prime Minister’s highlighted upon key areas like democracies can deliver.

The Prime Minister highlighted the flagship schemes of the present government related to banking the unbanked, insurance and housing facilities to the last mile.

Making India a hub of manufacturing too came to the fore, he added as the Prime Minister invited vaccine manufacturers to come and Make in India.

The foreign secretary while interacting with media told that there was unity and convergence on Afghanistan among the QUAD nations.He added that a rule based international order has been the key to have a free, open and inclusive Indo Pacific.

Mr. Shringla also said that G-4 nations- India, Japan, Germany and Brazil have expects reforms at the United Nations Security Council and a permanent seat for them at the world body.

He added that the Prime Minister’s call for reforms at Security council is in the same direction as he calls for reformed Multilateralism at United Nations.
