It is not quite clear as to how many universities are available in Northeast India. A google search approximately puts the number at 40. Of these, more than 20 of them are located in Assam.
It can become quite a task for parents and students to choose from this plethora of growing number of colleges and universities, especially when each of these institutions is claiming to be the best. Therefore, how can one ensure that the Higher Education Institution he or she chooses will return a good value for the money invested?
One way of finding a justifiable answer is by looking into the score or grade of the institution as announced by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). NAAC is an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, Government of India.
It is noteworthy that Don Bosco University, located in Guwahati in Assam is the only private university to be accredited ‘A’ by NAAC, 2022. “As Don Bosco completes 100 years of service in North East India, we are humbled to receive this significant recognition”, expressed Dr. Fr. Stephen Mavely, the Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University.
“We would like to retain as many students as we can to study in the Northeast with a promise of quality education at par with universities across India and around the globe and NAAC’s ‘A’ grade is a confirmation of our genuine efforts in this direction”. Dr. Mavely said. “And we will continue to improve on this.’ He added.
To achieve our goal to retain students in the Northeast, we are adding new programs to our list every year. Like this year, we have added the BSc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration. Our subsidised fees, makes it the most affordable program in its segment.

Coming back to assessing quality in an institution, here is how NAAC is ensuring to regulate the required standards in any higher education institution.
NAAC conducts assessment and accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) such as colleges, universities or other recognised institutions to derive an understanding of the ‘Quality Status’ of the institution.
NAAC evaluates the institutions for its conformance to the standards of quality in terms of its performance related to the educational processes and outcomes, curriculum coverage, teaching-learning processes, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organisation, governance, financial wellbeing and student services.
Don Bosco is a century old name in the education sector with an uncompromised mission for quality education and while keeping higher education affordable for everyone one with a 4.95 crore worth of scholarship program.
As Northeast of India is growing at a much faster pace that what it used to, we hope many more institutions in the region will be able to join the NAAC wagon!
